Thailand on Two Wheels: Culture, History, and Sustainable Travel
Thailand’s breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and storied history are best explored at a slower pace. With sustainable travel gaining momentum worldwide—83% of travellers now prioritise reducing their environmental impact—bikepacking is emerging as a meaningful way to discover the heart and soul of a destination.
Tim Kroeger, creator of Universal Traveller, recently completed a 16-day, 1,000-mile bikepacking journey from Bangkok through northern Thailand. Covering lush rice paddies, ancient temples, and mountain passes, his route offered an intimate glimpse into Thailand’s cultural heritage and hidden treasures.
“Thailand’s warmth, generosity, and history make it a truly unique destination,” said Tim Kroeger. “Bikepacking allows travellers to immerse themselves in local life, from traditional villages to historic landmarks, while treading lightly and experiencing the real beauty of Thailand.”
Key highlights of Tim’s journey
Exploring centuries-old temples and off-the-beaten-path villages, where time slows down, and traditions are preserved.
Conquering the famous Mae Hong Son Loop, known for its dramatic elevation climbs and spectacular mountain views, offering travellers a unique way to experience northern Thailand’s natural beauty.
Moments of cultural connection: From bamboo raft caves to local markets and spontaneous acts of kindness—such as villagers offering shelter and cold drinks—each encounter revealed Thailand’s renowned hospitality.
“Every part of Thailand tells a story,” Tim added. “Whether it’s cycling past golden rice paddies at dawn, stopping to explore ancient temples, or connecting with locals, the experience is unforgettable. It’s a reminder that travel should be about respect, connection, and leaving places better than we found them.”
