75 Healthy Happy Hour Finds in Austin

Austin does happy hour particularly well. The only problem? Somewhere along the way, “happy hour food” became synonymous with fried food, queso, and enough sodium to require a small recovery period.

So we went hunting for the Healthier Options.

This is healthy happy hour, Austin-style.

We prioritized fresh seafood, vegetables, lean proteins, lighter portions, Mediterranean and Japanese dishes, and thoughtful non-alcoholic options — with a particular weakness for anything that manages to be both exceptionally good and suspiciously inexpensive.

Editor’s Note: Alcohol is still alcohol; we have not discovered a medicinal margarita. Happy hour menus, prices, and times change frequently, so always check the restaurant’s current menu before making a special trip.

Best For: Editor’s Pick — Healthy Happy Hour Deal

TLC Austin

Editor’s Picks

Best Deal:Este’s 50-cent oysters. A dozen for $6 is borderline ridiculous.

Best Healthy Dinner Under $15:TLC Austin. Six $1 oysters plus $7 lemon-garlic mussels = $13.

Best Beautiful Happy Hour:Lutie’s at Commodore Perry Estate. Happy hour in what feels like a garden conservatory is rather more our speed.

Best Sushi:Uchi / Uchiko. The daily 4–6 PM social hours are one of the easiest ways to experience two of Austin’s defining Japanese restaurants without paying full dinner prices.

Best Zero-Proof:The Roosevelt Room. The zero-proof drinks are conceived as proper cocktails rather than consolation prizes.

Best Old Austin:Quality Seafood. $1 Gulf oysters, an old-school seafood market setting, and very little interest in pretending to be anything other than itself.

Best South Congress:June’s All Day. Twenty-five percent off the entire food menu is much more useful than a prescribed happy-hour menu because you can simply order the lighter dishes you actually want.

And the line I would put immediately beneath the list:

Healthy happy hour is less about finding a kale leaf at a bar and more about knowing what to order once you get there. In Austin, apparently, the answer is very often oysters.
