Villa d'Este

VIlla d’este

One of the worlds best preserved examples of the Renaissance is Tivoli’s Villa d’Este’s palace and gardens. The Villa d’ Este served as model for many later European gardens. Located in the Sabine mountains on around 11 acres the Villa originally belong to the Dukes of Ferrara of the ancient Este family. The Este family in Ferrara was the epitome of a court in which art and culture were paramount. This is evident in the lavishly adorned residence, Renaissance gardens and stunning fountains and waterworks. In Roman times residences of nobles were often built in this area near the waterfalls of the Aniene River.

The palace and Tivoli gardens were designed by Ligorio at the order of Cardinal lppolito ll d’ Este. The building plan is somewhat irregular due in part to the fact that the architect was forced to use parts of the former Monastery on the site. The beauty of its design is nonetheless breathtaking in a way that few places can compare. Words simply cannot do it justice. Villa d’ Este is a must see experience for any world traveler.
