A Burger Joint Hidden Behind a Velvet Curtain in Midtown
Hidden behind a red velvet curtain inside Thompson Central Park, Burger Joint is one of New York’s great exercises in contrast: step out of a polished Midtown hotel lobby and suddenly find yourself surrounded by graffiti-covered walls, handwritten signs, and the decidedly unfussy atmosphere of a neighborhood burger counter.
The restaurant originally became a New York favorite during the hotel’s former life as Le Parker Meridien, and remarkably little about the experience has changed. The Polo Bar — Ralph Lauren (watch the Reel)
If Ralph Lauren designed his ideal New York dining room, it would look remarkably like The Polo Bar — because, of course, he did. Dark wood, saddle leather, equestrian paintings, brass details, flattering light, and American classics come together in a room that feels somewhere between an old Manhattan institution and an exceedingly handsome private club.
The menu is inspired by Ralph Lauren’s personal favorites, with classics including the Polo Bar Burger, steaks, crab cakes, and chopped salad. The setting, however, is at least half the reason to come; this is one of those New York dinners for which dressing properly is very much part of the pleasure.
How to Actually Get a Reservation
This is the important part: do not wait until your trip to book it.
The Polo Bar requires reservations and officially accepts them up to one month ahead by calendar date. The reservation office opens at 10:00 AM Eastern every day, and bookings are made by calling 212-207-8562.
For the best chance, decide which night you want and call at 10:00 AM ET on the corresponding calendar date one month earlier. Be prepared to sit on hold, and be flexible about your dining time. This remains one of New York’s notoriously difficult tables.
Didn't get one? There is still hope. A useful second strategy is to call again around 4:00 PM on the day you want to dine and ask whether any cancellations have opened up. It isn't guaranteed, but last-minute cancellations do surface.

The spectacular United Palace in Washington Heights hosts Movies at the Palace, a series of screenings inside one of New York’s original Loew’s Wonder Theatres. Opened in 1930, the extraordinarily ornate theater has nearly 3,400 seats and remains one of Manhattan’s largest entertainment venues.
Select screenings are hosted by Lin-Manuel Miranda, often with additional live entertainment or programming surrounding the film. Best of all, tickets to the movies he hosts are free.
There is, however, a trick to getting in. Tickets are usually released at 10:00 AM exactly one week before each screening, and popular films can disappear quickly. Set an alarm, reserve as soon as they become available, and arrive early on the day; seating is general admission, and a reservation does not guarantee entry once the theater reaches capacity.

Visit Central Park’s Secret Formal Garden — For Free 🌷
Tucked into Central Park’s northeastern corner, the Conservatory Garden is a six-acre formal garden divided into three distinct landscapes: French, Italianate, and English. Expect spring tulips, flowering crabapple trees, fountains, manicured hedges, a wisteria-covered pergola, and considerably fewer crowds than you’ll encounter farther south in the park.
It’s also completely free and open year-round. Spring is particularly lovely for tulips, lilacs, and flowering crabapples; summer brings perennials, while autumn has its own displays.
How to Enter: Don't simply enter Central Park at 59th Street and expect to stumble upon it — the garden is much farther north. Head directly to Fifth Avenue at East 105th Street and enter through the enormous wrought-iron Vanderbilt Gate, which opens directly into the Italianate garden. For wheelchair-accessible entry, use the North Gate near Fifth Avenue and 106th Street.

See Contemporary Art Inside a Historic Mansion — For Free
Just off Fifth Avenue, Salon 94 occupies an extraordinary 17,500-square-foot landmark mansion originally built between 1913 and 1915 for philanthropist Archer Huntington and sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington. The building later spent nearly 80 years as the home of the National Academy of Design before being restored and renovated by architect Rafael Viñoly.
The result makes the gallery worth knowing independently of any single exhibition: contemporary art and collectible design are installed among restored parquet floors, carved woodwork, fireplaces, mahogany-paneled rooms, and more contemporary gallery spaces. Exhibitions rotate throughout the year, so there is often something entirely different to discover on a return visit.
About the Reel: The video features Tom Sachs’ 2026 FURNITURE takeover, which filled the building with furniture, ceramics, lighting, sculpture, and painting exploring his bricolage-driven approach to making. Come with time to wander — and preferably measurements for that suspiciously perfect piece of furniture you’re inevitably going to find.

The NYC Fabric Store Behind Project Runway
For anyone who shops New York for interiors, fashion, or simply beautiful materials, Mood Fabrics is worth knowing. The sprawling Garment District store carries thousands of fabrics, trims, buttons, notions, and designer textiles, with everything from silk, linen, and wool to upholstery and specialty fabrics.
Fashion people will recognize Mood as the fabric destination made famous by Project Runway, but you certainly don’t need to be sewing a dress to justify the visit. Interior designers and decorators should head toward the home and upholstery fabrics, where discontinued and discounted designer textiles can make this a particularly good sourcing stop.
The Reel advertises 60% off cotton and 50% off other fabrics, but I would not publish those codes as evergreen information; treat them as a promotion attached to the original video rather than a standing offer.

Paris Comes Downtown
The legendary French department store Printemps has brought its first U.S. location to New York, but this is less a conventional department store than a reason to go exploring.
Set inside the landmark One Wall Street, the interiors were conceived by Paris-based designer Laura Gonzalez, with individual rooms shifting dramatically in mood, materials, and architecture as you move through the store. Fashion, beauty, art, design, and hospitality are deliberately woven together; even if you have absolutely no intention of shopping, the interiors alone warrant a visit.
The showpiece is the Red Room, a spectacular historic space covered in approximately 33 million red and gold mosaic tiles, originally created in the 1930s for the Irving Trust Company. Rather than erase the building's history, Printemps has made it part of the experience.

The New York menswear brand operates its flagship from Alfré’s Penthouse, a 6,000-square-foot private showroom high above Midtown. There are no walk-ins; book an appointment, take the private elevator to the penthouse, and shop the collection with a personal styling concierge in a space designed to feel more like a private club than a clothing store.
The collection centers on polished, classic menswear — Oxford shirts, leather belts, ties, accessories, and casual pieces — with additional items available exclusively at the Penthouse. There is no requirement to purchase, so this works surprisingly well as a shopping date rather than an errand. And if you do buy something, the experience currently includes one of Alfré’s chilled martinis while your purchases are wrapped.

Step Inside the World of Sabyasachi
One of India’s most celebrated luxury designers, Sabyasachi Mukherjee is known for an unapologetically maximalist world of extraordinary textiles, jewelry, embroidery, and craftsmanship. His New York flagship brings that same philosophy to the West Village; and it is worth visiting whether or not you intend to shop.
Set inside a historic building on Christopher Street, the store feels closer to a private museum or collector’s home than a traditional luxury boutique. Patterned rugs, chandeliers, antique furniture, paintings, richly colored walls, and objects collected from around the world create an extraordinarily layered backdrop for the designer’s clothing and jewelry.
This is retail as theatre; go for the fashion, but pay just as much attention to the rooms.

A New Chapter for an NYC Design Landmark
When Issey Miyake moved uptown to Madison Avenue, the challenge wasn’t simply designing another flagship; it was deciding what to carry forward.
The brand’s former Tribeca store, opened in 2001 and designed by legendary architect Frank Gehry, had become a New York design landmark in its own right. For the new Madison Avenue flagship, architecture studio SO–IL approached the move as an evolution rather than a replacement.
Elements from Gehry’s original interior were preserved and reimagined within the new space, including glass panels and a titanium installation, creating a physical connection between two generations of Issey Miyake in New York.
The result is particularly worth visiting for anyone interested in the intersection of fashion, architecture, and adaptive design; a retail space that treats its own design history as something worth preserving.

A Bathhouse Inside a Historic Hudson Factory
What was once a 19th-century textile mill and pocketbook factory has been transformed into Pocketbook Hudson, an ambitious hotel, arts, dining, and wellness complex just a few blocks from Hudson’s Warren Street.

A Perfect Fall Day Trip: B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill 🍎🍂
About 130 miles from Manhattan — roughly a 2½-hour drive, depending on traffic — B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill in Mystic, Connecticut, is one of those autumn destinations that makes leaving New York City entirely worthwhile.
Family-owned since 1881, Clyde’s is the oldest steam-powered cider mill in the United States and still uses its historic press to make cider today. Visit during pressing season and you can watch the machinery in action before settling into the considerably more important business of cider donuts, fresh-pressed apple cider, hard cider, apple wine, and other fall treats.
The mill traditionally opens for the season on September 1, and autumn weekends can become extremely busy, so an early arrival is worth the alarm clock. Cider-making demonstrations are generally scheduled on select mornings during the season.
And don't drive straight back to Manhattan. Downtown Mystic is approximately five miles from the mill, making it an easy second stop for lunch, shopping, and a walk along the waterfront before heading home.
