Airbnb Summer Guide
First time staying in the Italian countryside?
Not to worry...
This was my first experience mangaging a mediaval house as well. For that reason, I've created this guide to help you manage the house during the warmer months. A few very simple adjustments can make the house much cooler and simpler during your summer stay.
As always, if you have any questions -- dont hesisate to ask!
BEDROOMS
Each room in the house has a different temperature (depending on the weather). It is recomended to keep both main bedroom doors shut at all times during the day. Not only will it help you keep the rooms cooler, it will also help keep bugs out of the bedrooms!
High Temperature Days
If it is very hot, The ‘Italian Trick’ is shut the outer metal shutters on the Airbnb (the brown ones), but leave the inner glass windows open! This let's the breeze come in but keeps the heat of the sun out during the hottest part of the day! After sundown you can open the shutters and glass windows.
The Loft
You can open the window at the top of the stairs to let out the heat.
Note: Please never depart the property with any of these Velux windows open. It can rain anytime in Italy and the rain will pour in on the beds
the kitchen
The kitchen is one of the coolest room in the house if you keep the window open. However, having a kitchen window open can create a bug issue in the house. Here is how to easily avoid this:
#1 - Do not leave any cooked food out/ wash dishes & cups straight away
Washing dishes directly after eating as well as tightly closing bags with organic trash is a must during the summer months!
#2 - The Kitchen door needs to stay closed at all times (24/7)
This way the kitchen stays very cool while keeping bugs out of the rest of the house. The kitchen is the only room mosquitos try to come into during the evening hours. For this reason, I always keep the door shut to ensure there is never a mosquito in the bedroom at night. Another option: If you wish to open the landing area during the day, simply keep the doors to the bedrooms rooms you’ll be sleeping in shut.
#3 - Garbage Collection
A paid trash service collects the sorted trash from the door each morning. For the summer, the most important days are Organic Food Trash Days. Keeping food out of the house ensures you are not attracting bugs into the open windows. The days the organic trash gets collected are MONDAY, THURSDAY, & SATURDAY. There is a hook to the right of the door to hang the trash on. :)
Place the bags organic trash (only) out on the hook the night before and collecion will take them in the morning!
PLANTS
Whilst all the outdoor plants around the Airbnb are watered before your arrival, they would greatly appreciate some extra water during the hotter months. Feel free to give them a drink if they start looking sad!
Not only do they bring a beautiful aesthetic to the neighborhood, but your planter box contains fresh Basil & Rosemary for cooking while you are here. Additionally, the two large plants on either side of the door are Foglie di Alloro, or in English — Bay Leaves. Feel free to take a leaf or two home to dry out and use for future receipes!
fans
The house has been equipped with multiple fans. Placing a fan in front of an open window can help pull cool breeze from the outside to the inside. It can also help keep bugs out as they often avoid heavy breezes. If you need additional fans, you’ll find them in boxes under the stairs.
For safety, make sure you are not turning on a fan right next a window containing a mosquito net or sheers.
