Exploring the Aqueducts of San Gregorio da Sassola

The Roman Aqueducts Expedition

Discover the engineering marvels that shaped ancient Rome on our exclusive Great Roman Aqueducts Tour.

A bit of Roman History

The statement "panem et circenses" refers to the concept of providing the Roman populace with free food (panem) and entertainment (circenses), particularly through events like chariot races and gladiatorial contests in the Circus Maximus. This strategy was employed by Roman emperors as a means of appeasing and distracting the citizens, thereby maintaining social order and political stability.

Access to clean water was crucial for Rome's prosperity. The aqueduct system transported fresh water, supporting the city's growth, agriculture, sanitation, and commerce.

With eleven aqueducts strategically carved through mountainous terrain and adorned with magnificent bridges, the Roman countryside tells tales of unparalleled engineering prowess. Five of these aqueducts traversed the territory of present-day San Gregorio da Sassola, where remnants of three still stand in awe-inspiring grandeur.
